The Family: Stefan Weinert

Before and after receiving his MA in theatre and film set design at the Universität für angewandte Kunst in Vienna in 1991, Stefan Weinert trained as an actor in Cologne and New York. 

Until 1996 he worked as a set designer exclusively for major theatre and opera houses including the Liceu Barcelona, Wiener Staatsoper and the Oper der Stadt Köln. 

Thereafter he turned his attention to film, directing and producing films. 

Throughout his design and directing career, Stefan Weinert has continued to work as an actor in international TV and film productions, appearing with such luminaries as Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Tom Hardy, Tony Todd, Val Kilmer, Tim Roth and Catherine Deneuve.

2009 saw the premiere in Berlin of Weinert’s debut full-length documentary film FACE TO THE WALL (GESICHT ZUR WAND). Produced and directed by Stefan Weinert, the film has since gone on to earn many awards and accolades and has been screened across the globe. Since its premiere Weinert has frequently presented the film at international film festivals as an official representative of the Federal Republic of Germany. THE FAMILY (DIE FAMILIE) is Stefan Weinert’s second documentary film dealing with the GDR dictatorship. 

He is currently developing a 90-minute drama feature, which he will direct himself.
